Controversial Director on Fire: "Have Some Balls"

Indian film director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri has voiced his strong displeasure against the portrayal of India’s partition in filmmaker Nikhil Advani’s series, ‘Freedom at Midnight’.

In a lengthy social media post, Agnihotri complained that Nikhil Advani failed to clearly distinguish between the aggressors and the victims in his portrayal of partition violence.

Vivek Agnihotri also advised Nikhil to ‘have some balls’ to show what according to him is the ‘complete unaltered truth’ regarding partition. Agnihotri claimed the violence to be a Hindu genocide driven by religious motives.

He accused the series of ‘whitewashing’ the communal elements and said that the makers willfully made the series ‘black and white’ without highlighting any colours and religious associations.

Social media users from both sides have expressed their strong opinions on this issue. While some users came out in Agnihotri’s support, others blamed him of deliberating promoting communal hatred by twisting the facts.

One user came out in his support and said, “Partition was a tragedy, especially for Hindus, and it’s about time someone highlighted this aspect. Thank you, Vivek!”

Another user strongly objected to Agnihotri’s stance, commenting, “Using history to stoke communal sentiments is dangerous. Let art remain neutral; not everything needs to be coloured with divisive tones.”

Vivek Agnihotri’s remarks have once again ignited the debate around Bollywood’s representation of historical accuracy, with many calling for filmmakers to maintain a neutral stance in such cases.
