Kajol Maa Reviews

Audiences and critics are mixed on the new Indian horror film Maa.

Many had hoped for a new approach to the genre especially with the mythology and horror combination which has potential but is tough to execute well.

Viewer feedback says while the opening with the mythological backstory was interesting, the overall story failed to hold the audience through out.

The script is being singled out as weak and predictable which kills the suspense and impact.

Despite all the shortcomings Kajol is being praised for her performance.

Both critics and fans are saying she brings in strength and emotional depth to her role and almost carries the film on her shoulders.

Ronit Roy is also getting positive reviews for adding some nuance to the story but his contribution is not enough to save the uneven plot.

Visual effects have been a major point of contention, many are finding them unconvincing and detrimental to the immersive experience of a horror film.

The climax is another area where opinions are divided, some feel it’s a let down that spoils the whole experience and doesn’t capitalise on the earlier potential.

In the end Maa has left the audience divided. Kajol’s fans will find something in her performance but those looking for a robust mix of mythology and horror will be disappointed.

The lukewarm reception is a reminder that Indian horror cinema still has a long way to go to deliver genre defining experiences that will resonate with the audience.
