Anand Deverakonda and Vaishnavi Chaitanya’s Epic is facing brutal trolling after its OTT premiere on Netflix. Viewers are tearing into the film over its screenplay, weak emotional depth and lack of chemistry between the lead pair.
Directed by Aditya Haasan, who impressed audiences with his debut 90s on OTT, Epic was expected to deliver another engaging and heart-warming story. Instead, many viewers feel the film fails to create a convincing love story. The artificial-looking UK portions, flat screenplay and cringe family scenes that fail to connect emotionally have also come under fire.
One viewer called Epic “short film material,” slammed Anand’s performance and said Vaishnavi did justice to her role. The reaction also pointed to the lack of chemistry between the lead pair and the absence of a strong conflict. Another viewer questioned how the film even secured a theatrical release, while someone else compared its story to content lifted from an NRI confessions page.
The backlash has also triggered a discussion about second-film pressure in Tollywood. One social media user clubbed Aditya Haasan with Buchi Babu Sana and Srikanth Odela, arguing that their follow-ups, Epic, Peddi and The Paradise, failed to match the expectations created by their first films.
The negative response suggests that Epic has failed to impress its target audience. The film faced failure in theaters, and OTT reactions also suggest a complete rejection.
The film is still attracting views on Netflix. But getting people to watch a film and getting them to like it are two different things. Epic may be drawing attention, but its content is clearly facing heavy backlash from OTT audiences.
