Kriti Sanon recently found herself at the centre of a social media storm after her Giva ad for Raksha Bandhan sparked controversy. Several netizens lashed out at her for wearing an outfit they considered inappropriate while celebrating the festival with her brother.
The trolls also pointed out that the ad did not show traditional Raksha Bandhan rituals like applying tilak. In fact, according to many, Kriti appeared to give more importance to her pet dog than her brother in the advertisement.
That doesn’t showcase the spirit of Raksha Bandhan as accused by many on social media. Amid the backlash, Kriti has now responded to the criticism with a heartfelt message. Sharing a note on social media, she addressed the debate around women’s clothing and questioned why a woman’s attire often becomes the focus during discussions about traditions and festivals.
In her message, Kriti wrote that the true essence of festivals does not lie in the clothes one wears, but in the emotions and meaning behind the traditions. She explained that Raksha Bandhan represents a bond of protection and love between siblings, where brothers and sisters pray for each other’s happiness, health, and long life.
She also highlighted that the same feelings of love and care extend towards pets. Kriti said that her prayers and affection include her dogs as well because they are a part of her family.
Responding to the criticism over her outfit, Kriti questioned, “Also, when will we stop telling women what to wear?” She stated that ethnic fashion has changed over the years and a woman’s respect for her culture should not be judged by her clothes.
According to Kriti, traditions and culture are carried in a person’s heart and values, not in their appearance. Her response has once again sparked conversations online about changing perspectives around festivals, fashion, and the way women are judged for their choices.
