Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, will open with the story of Sumali, Raavana’s grandfather. Actor Chetan Hansraj confirmed that he plays Sumali and that his storyline sets the stage for the epic.
Though rarely mentioned in popular retellings, Sumali plays a crucial role in the ancient text. He is central to Raavana’s rise and the unfolding events of the Ramayana. In the epic, he is a powerful rakshasa king married to Ketumati.
Sumali is the father of several children, including Kaikashi, who becomes Raavana’s mother. The film will present him as the driving force behind the circumstances that lead to Raavana’s birth and eventual dominance.
Hansraj revealed that starting with Sumali’s story shows how Raavana’s maternal family influenced the saga. He described it as the best shoot of his life, praising the epic scale, international crew, and grand vision of the production.
While details remain under wraps, the excitement among the team hints at a powerful retelling. By focusing on Sumali’s ambitions and alliances, the film explores the roots of conflict leading to Sita’s abduction and the legendary war with Lord Ram.
