The Divorce Dilemma: Courage or Cowardice?

DivorceIn Erica Jong’s book “Fear of Fifty,” she explores the topic of divorce, describing it as a rite of passage for her generation, a necessary scar that makes everything that follows more bearable. While some may dismiss divorce as a reflection of Western values, the truth is that people everywhere experience changes in their lives and desires as they grow older. Even at an older age, individuals can have their own demands and expectations, leading to the breaking point of a marriage. Divorce is a painful and traumatic experience, akin to cutting off a part of oneself. It involves feelings of anger, betrayal, fear, and depression, but eventually, acceptance and a new reality emerge. Children, too, must adapt and find peace with their parents’ separation, ideally without being caught in the crossfire of their parents’ animosity.

The concept of divorce is not limited to any specific culture or religion. While Christian marriages are intended to be lifelong commitments, Muslim ceremonies acknowledge the possibility of divorce from the beginning. Counseling sessions offered by the Church to new couples do not seem to prevent divorce rates from resembling those of Muslim couples, who do not have such counseling. Divorce is an inevitable part of life, a passage that many individuals experience. Society’s judgment of divorce has softened over time, although women still face more stigma than men in this regard. It is crucial to recognize that divorce can also be an act of courage, liberating individuals from unhappy or abusive marriages. Remaining in an incompatible and loveless relationship for the sake of the children can be equally traumatic for them. However, divorce can also be an act of cowardice, especially when people hastily rush into it due to the excitement of a new affair. Marriage is a commitment that requires responsibility from both partners, and it is important to carefully consider the consequences before making the decision to walk away.
