As 2025 came to an end, the Indian box office witnessed a year of contrasting fortunes. The period saw unexpected blockbusters alongside major disappointments, reflecting changing audience tastes and unpredictable theatrical trends across industries and languages.
Dhurandhar emerged as the biggest success of the year. The film collected nearly ₹815 crore within just 26 days and continued its strong run. Its performance stood out as one of the fastest and most dominant box office achievements of 2025.
Trailing behind were Kantara: Chapter 1 and Chhaava, which secured second and third positions. The films earned approximately ₹701 crore and ₹689 crore, respectively, proving that well-established franchises and rooted storytelling still command massive audience interest.
Saiyaara delivered a notable surprise by crossing ₹390 crore despite being led by newcomers. Mahavatar Narasimha also made history, rewriting benchmarks to become India’s highest-grossing animated film and expanding the market for animation-driven theatrical releases.
Regional cinema played a crucial role during the year. Gujarati cinema, in particular, found major success with Laalo Krishna Sada Sahayate, which turned into a historic hit after beginning its run with relatively modest opening numbers.
Mollywood also enjoyed a successful year, with several films crossing the ₹100 crore milestone. These results highlighted the growing national appeal of Malayalam cinema beyond its traditional regional audience base.
However, not all big releases met expectations. War 2, Sikandar, and Game Changer struggled at the box office and were counted among the most prominent underperformers of the year despite significant hype.
Even Hollywood titles faced challenges in Indian theatres. Avatar: Fire and Ash failed to reach its projected potential, reinforcing the idea that scale alone no longer guarantees success in a competitive market.
Overall, 2025 clearly reflected a shift in audience preference. Strong storytelling, originality, and emotional connection proved more important than star power in determining box office outcomes.
