4 M pounds for Ambedkar’s London Home!

Government of Maharashtra is all set to acquire a prime property in London where the architect of Indian constitution, Ambedkar lived during his student days in 1920s. They say the deal is closed at 4 Million Pounds. The owners of the 10 King Henry’s Road townhouse on a leafy street in Chalk Farm area of north London put an ‘under offer’ sign board indicating the deal is cut.

Ambedkar set to have lived there in 1921-22 when he studied at London School of Economics (LSE). A senior Indian High Commission diplomat in London is said to have mediated the deal. The government is planning to make it as a museum of Ambedkar or use one of the floors as a transitory residence for Indian students who arrive in the UK to study.

Final decision regarding the after sale purpose is not taken. The 2,050 sq feet three-storey house is in one of London’s prime locations and was put up for sale through an estate agent last year. The house will undergo some minor repairs before opening for public.
