Facebook set up its first Indian office in 2010, in Hyderabad and then, the count of the number of active users was just 8 million. The subcontinent had a rapid growth in the number of users and majority of them use mobile phones for facebook. 84 million users out of the 100 million access facebook via mobile phones. Facebook, which was founded in 2004, had 1.23 billion users as of 31 December, 2013, out of which 183 million are from the US.

Mark Zuckerberg is now more determined and has set a target of reaching 1 billion active users from India. Facebook can become a core communication tool, if it continues with the same trajectory, says Neha Dharia, analyst with UK-based firm Ovum.
