Kalki 2898 AD grossed USD 3.70 million (Rs. 31 crores) in its second weekend globally, pushing its total gross to USD 25.50 million (Rs. 210+ crores) to date.
Combined with Rs. 575 crores in India, the worldwide gross stands at Rs. 785+ crores, making it the tenth highest-grossing Indian film. It is expected to climb a couple of spots soon and could cross the 900-crore mark in its lifetime.
However, the makers of Kalki 2898 AD have released a poster claiming the film has already collected 900 crores.
A section of the media is accusing the makers of manipulating numbers in an attempt to cross the 1000-crore mark and even beat films like Pathaan, Jawan, and RRR. They suggest that Kalki’s makers are desperate and are declaring inflated collection numbers.
Kalki’s overseas business is approximately 210 crores (25M USD). Deducting this from the claimed 900 crores, India’s 11-day gross stands at 690 crores (588 crores nett). But trade reports reveal a significantly different story: 465-475 crores net. That’s a discrepancy of 112-122 crores net between official and trade numbers.
However, we think that the makers know what collection figure they should release to the public. They are the ones who know exactly how much the movie is making at the box office. Even if they are exaggerating the figures, it can be seen as their strategy to attract more audience, a common practice in the industry.
What matters is that Kalki 2898 AD, despite its shortcomings, has emerged as a successful film and is on its way to becoming a hit, making money for all parties involved.
