Suriya is returning to theaters with Kanguva, directed by Siva, which will be released in a few hours from now. The film was projected as the first 1000-crore film from the Tamil cinema.
The advance bookings began earlier in the week. The response has been just about okay and nothing extraordinary which is disappointing for a film of such huge scale and budget.

However, Kanguva is set to become Suriya’s biggest opening. By 8 PM on Wednesday, the movie had collected Rs 6 crore in Tamil Nadu and reached a total of Rs 12 crore across India.
In Tamil Nadu, Kanguva’s advance sales rank as the fourth highest this year, trailing behind The GOAT (Rs 19 crore), Vettaiyan (Rs 12.5 crore), and Amaran (Rs 10 crore).

Final bookings are projected to reach around Rs 7-8 crore and might surpass Indian 2 and Thangalaan.
Kerala follows as the second-highest contributor for Kanguva with Rs 2.5 crore, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have reached Rs 1.75 crore.

Pre-sales in Karnataka and North India are slower but could pick up on release day with walk-in viewers.
Kanguva’s bookings may close around Rs 15 crore in India which will make it the third biggest Tamil film opener this year.
In Tamil Nadu, day one earnings are expected to be around Rs 13-15 crore, placing it close to Amaran’s Rs 16 crore opening.
Nationwide, Kanguva could earn over Rs 30-32 crore on its first day, with Tamil Nadu leading at Rs 15 crore, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana at Rs 8 crore, Kerala at Rs 6 crore, North India at Rs 3 crore, and Karnataka at Rs 2.5 crore.
These are just decent numbers and it needs to collect a worldwide gross of 400 crores to break even. The film will need a tremendous word of mouth from the audience to get there.
As of now, 1000 crore looks like a distant dream and out of reach. But let’s hope for the best.
