Varun Tej’s Korean Kanakaraju had a decent run at the box office and gave the actor some much-needed relief after a long phase of disappointments. The film received reasonably good support in theatres and managed to end its theatrical journey on a positive note.
According to trade estimates, Korean Kanakaraju collected around Rs. 30 crores gross in India. In North America, the film managed around $435K against a reported breakeven target of around $600K. So, the film will incur some minor losses in the US.
Now, the film is heading to Netflix on September 4, 2026. The availability of different language versions is yet to be clarified.
OTT audiences often look at a film very differently from theatre audiences, and social media can completely change the conversation around a movie after its digital release. We have seen theatrical hit films getting brutally trolled after arriving on OTT, while some films that failed in theatres later found appreciation among streaming audiences.
Korean Kanakaraju will be an interesting case because the film has both strengths and weaknesses that could become more visible on a smaller screen. The comedy may work better for viewers watching casually at home. At the same time, the weaknesses in the screenplay, particularly in the second half, could also become much harder to ignore. Also, the climax is sure to draw a lot of mixed reactions for the way it was executed.
This means the OTT release could either give Korean Kanakaraju a second life or completely change the way people look at its theatrical success.
For Varun Tej, the theatrical success was already a welcome relief after several setbacks. Now, Korean Kanakaraju has one more challenge: proving that its success was not limited to the theatre audience.
