Something interesting is happening with big-star films right now. A number of heroes are stepping into stories set decades in the past. NBK111, Toxic, Fauzi and Ranabaali are all exploring different period worlds.
But this may not be just a coincidence.
After seeing star heroes in modern-day action dramas for years, filmmakers need new ways to present them. Taking the story back in time instantly changes the hero’s look, attitude and surroundings. The same star can suddenly feel completely different without actually changing the star himself.
There is also a commercial advantage. A period world gives the film something extra to sell. The costumes, cars, locations, sets and overall atmosphere can become part of the hype even before the story is fully known.
For big-budget films, especially those targeting multiple markets, that visual identity can make a difference.
But there is a catch. If too many star heroes start going back in time, the period setting itself could become another formula.
That is where the real challenge lies. Going back to the past can make a film look fresh, but it cannot hide an ordinary story for long.
The era can create curiosity. The story still has to deliver.
