Vishnupriya Bhimeneni recently landed in controversy over the kind of content she is sharing through paid subscriptions on social media. A complaint has reportedly been filed, with some people accusing her of promoting adult type content and influencing younger audiences in a negative way.
This issue has now gone beyond just one person. Earlier, social media was mainly for sharing photos and staying connected. Now, it has become a full business model. Many creators are offering subscription plans where users pay around Rs. 300 to Rs. 400 per month to see “exclusive” content.
Interestingly, in Vishnupriya’s case, the controversy seems to have helped her gain huge number of subscribers. Instead of reducing her reach, it has reportedly doubled her subscribers and revenue.
Now another actress cum social media figure, Ananya Nagalla, has also started a similar subscription model, charging around Rs. 390 per month. Reports say that within minutes of announcing it, more than 600 users subscribed, showing there is clear demand for this kind of content.
Many of these creators are focusing more on glamour, semi nudity, and bold content instead of meaningful or skill-based content. There is also worry about younger audiences wasting money regularly on such subscriptions without getting much value in return.
Another concern is the influence it creates. Young minds may start thinking this is an easy way to earn money instead of focusing on education or stable career paths.
While this is all about personal choices, and as long as they do nothing illegal, people can do nothing but troll them and make them more popular.
Creators have the right to earn from their content, and users have the freedom to decide what they want to watch and pay for.
In simple terms, social media has become a business, and like any business, it comes with both opportunities and risks. How this trend shapes up in the long run will depend on how responsibly both creators and audiences handle it.
