One major tension quietly building inside Tollywood right now is no longer just about content or openings. It is about ticket pricing and theatre economics. Unexpectedly, Peddi may become the first big star hero film caught directly in the middle of that conflict.
At the press meet conducted today by Telangana exhibitors, theatre owners openly demanded a shift from the existing rental-based system to a percentage-sharing revenue model. According to exhibitors, the current structure heavily benefits producers and distributors, while theatres carry most of the financial risk during weak theatrical periods.
Exhibitors even cited films like Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu and Pushpa 2 while explaining how theatres continue struggling despite some films generating huge overall revenues.
However, the biggest talking point came from Sirish Reddy of SVC Films. He reportedly stated that exhibitors collectively do not want ticket price hikes anymore in Telangana, even if governments permit them through special GOs.
That statement immediately triggered discussion around Peddi because the film is one of the biggest upcoming Telugu releases and is naturally expected to seek premium pricing to maximize opening weekend revenues.
The issue becomes even more interesting because Peddi’s Nizam distribution is being handled by Mythri Movie Makers, a banner that exhibitors reportedly feel has not supported the percentage-sharing model.
This situation reflects a larger frustration growing among exhibitors. For years, producers have relied heavily on ticket hikes, benefit shows, and premium pricing to recover massive budgets quickly. But many exhibitors now believe audiences are slowly getting exhausted by constantly increasing ticket rates, especially at a time when theatrical footfalls are already becoming inconsistent.
From the exhibitors’ perspective, regular pricing could encourage healthier occupancy and longer theatrical runs. But for producers of large-scale pan-India films like Peddi, premium pricing often becomes crucial because of massive recovery targets.
That is why this standoff could become extremely important for Tollywood going forward. If exhibitors firmly reject ticket hikes even after government approvals, producers may eventually need to rethink their recovery strategies.
