1000 Cr OTT Deal: Is It Biggest Joke In Indian Cinema?

Ramayan film OTT deal buzz

There is no denying that the OTT market has become a major contributor to film production and marketing. This trend grew stronger after the Covid phase. OTT platforms began investing hundreds of crores in big, star-driven projects.

Now, Ramayan is being promoted as one of the biggest projects in Indian cinema. A strong promotional campaign is underway. Reports claim that the producer was offered Rs 700 crore for the OTT rights of the film.

Interestingly, these reports also suggest that the producer rejected the offer. It is said that they are aiming for a Rs 1000 crore deal. This demand is reportedly linked to the film’s massive budget of around Rs 4000 crore.

However, expecting a Rs 1000 crore OTT deal appears unrealistic. Such a figure is extremely rare and difficult to justify. Even for a large-scale project, this number seems highly ambitious in the current market scenario.

Leading platforms like Netflix or Amazon may have the financial strength. But there is limited buzz around the project at this stage. This makes it difficult to support such a high valuation for its digital rights.

Ranbir Kapoor is a major star in Indian cinema. There could also be some reach from Yash in Kannada markets. However, that alone may not be enough to command such a massive OTT deal.

If the film was directed by SS Rajamouli or had a similar scale of proven success, the situation might have been different. At present, the expectations appear to be ahead of the actual market response.

The recently released video content has also received a mixed reaction. There is no strong momentum building around the film yet. This further raises doubts about the high figures being circulated.

If the film truly delivers on its grand scale and quality, a big deal is possible. However, at this point, the Rs 1000 crore OTT demand looks more like speculation than a confirmed reality.
