Sardar 2 Disaster: Another Big Lesson for Filmmakers?

Sardar 2 faces runtime criticism

Karthi’s Sardar 2 directed by PS Mithran, was released in theatres on September 10th and has received disastrous responses from audiences and critics.

Since the original Sardar was a huge success and Sardar 2 features SJ Suryah in the antagonist role, it has had huge expectations among audiences since its announcement.

However, shockingly, Sardar 2 has ended up as a terrible disappointment. Many viewers, after watching it, have suggested that even though the film has a solid plot, director PS Mithran has wasted it with poor execution and draggy narration.

Also, many people claimed that the major drawback of Sardar 2 was its runtime, as it has a length of almost around 3 hours. They noted that if the team had trimmed some portions, then Sardar 2 would have become a decent watch.

In this scenario, now there is strong speculation that even though the whole crew advised the director to trim the length of the film, he didn’t agree to do it.

Consequently, in response to this rumour, many trackers and trade experts are suggesting that a 3-hour runtime is always a huge risk and unless the film is gripping, it ends up being a major reason for a film’s failure.

They note that not only Sardar 2, but many movies have ended up as terrible disasters because of a long runtime. Hence, they feel that upcoming filmmakers should take a lesson from the failure of Sardar 2 and avoid long runtimes.

Nonetheless, due to the negative word of mouth, Sardar 2 is now struggling to sustain itself in theatres and is heading towards a washout status. It remains to be seen whether Kollywood filmmakers will avoid long runtimes from now on and avoid the risk of failure.
