Suriya’s Vishwanath And Sons has picked up solid momentum after a relatively modest start at the Indian box office. The film collected around Rs. 20 crores gross on Day 1 before showing a significant jump on Saturday.
Day 2 saw the film bring in approximately Rs. 25 crores gross across India, taking its two-day total to around Rs. 45 crores gross. The jump is an encouraging sign, especially for a film that opened to surprisingly low advance bookings.
The overseas performance has been even stronger. The overseas breakeven target for the film is around $4.25 million. Vishwanath And Sons collected around $1.45 million, or approximately Rs. 13.84 crores, on its opening day overseas. In North America, the film earned $676K through premieres and Day 1, with the Telugu version contributing $436K and the Tamil version $240K.
This is being reported as Suriya’s biggest overseas and North American (US) opener.
The momentum continued on Saturday in North America, as the film collected around $500K, including approximately $300K from Telugu shows and $200K from Tamil shows. That makes it the highest Saturday gross of the year across Telugu and Tamil films in the territory.
Overall, Vishwanath And Sons has reportedly collected around Rs. 31.60 crore gross overseas in its first two days. Combining the Indian and overseas figures, the film has crossed Rs. 76 crores worldwide in just two days.
However, the real challenge starts now.
The film needs around Rs. 200 crores gross worldwide to reach its breakeven point. A Rs. 100 crore-plus worldwide gross over the three-day opening weekend is a given, with Sunday also expected to collect big numbers.
The bigger question is what happens from Monday. With a huge breakeven target, Vishwanath And Sons will need sustained numbers throughout the weekdays to emerge as a genuine hit.
