AP Parishad Elections on November 5, Polling Postponed in 3 Mandals

The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission has decided to conduct MPTC and ZPTC elections on November 5 as scheduled across most parts of the state, despite heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Murasu. However, polling has been postponed in three mandals of Guntur district.

State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha reviewed the situation with district collectors through a video conference on Wednesday, November 4. The meeting focused on rainfall, flooding and logistical difficulties in cyclone-affected areas.

Most district collectors informed the SEC that rainfall had reduced and conditions were suitable for conducting elections. However, some officials reported difficulties in transporting election materials and deploying polling personnel in flood-affected locations.

Following the review, the SEC directed officials to proceed with polling wherever conditions were suitable. The commission also indicated that decisions concerning severely affected areas would be based on reports from district administrations.

Meanwhile, Guntur district Collector Sai Kantha Varma announced that elections would be postponed in Pedanandipadu, Kakumanu and Phirangipuram mandals due to the continuing impact of rain and flooding.

Officials reported that transporting election materials to certain locations had become difficult. The postponement was announced with the permission of the State Election Commission, while revised polling dates for the three mandals are yet to be announced.

For the remaining areas, MPTC and ZPTC polling is scheduled from 7 AM to 5 PM on November 5. Counting of votes is scheduled to begin at 8 AM on November 7, according to the revised election timetable.

The SEC’s decision comes after concerns that Cyclone Murasu could force another statewide postponement of the rural local body elections. The commission has instead opted to continue polling in areas where the necessary arrangements are in place.

The elections are politically significant for the ruling TDP-Jana Sena-BJP alliance and opposition YSRCP, particularly following the municipal election results. Both sides will be looking to demonstrate their support in rural Andhra Pradesh.
