Andhra Pradesh is sending 29 government school teachers to Finland for an eight-day professional development programme from August 17 to 26. Selected from the State Best Teacher Award winners, they will visit schools in Turku and Rauma and interact with Finnish educators.
The programme, conducted with the University of Turku, will cover child-centred learning, foundational education, play-based teaching, digital learning and teacher mentoring.
For Education Minister Nara Lokesh, this is about more than sending teachers abroad. The teachers are expected to bring back useful ideas, develop projects in their schools and share their learning with other teachers across the state.
Earlier this year, 37 AP teachers were also sent to Singapore for professional training. These programmes are part of Lokesh’s larger plan to develop an AP Model of Education.
The aim is not to copy Finland’s education system. AP has its own classrooms and challenges. The focus is on finding ideas that can work here and adapting them to local needs.
The real impact will be seen after the teachers return. If their new methods reach more teachers and improve classroom learning, a small group of 29 teachers could end up influencing thousands of students.
For parents, the results will be simple to judge. Better learning, more confident students and stronger government schools.
The Finland trip lasts eight days. The bigger experiment begins when these teachers return to Andhra Pradesh.
