The Andhra Pradesh government has rolled out Mee Mart, a new initiative aimed at transforming traditional ration shops into mini-supermarkets. The project seeks to offer quality daily-use products at lower prices and is positioned as a public-sector alternative to private chains such as DMart.
Under the plan, 1,000 Mee Mart outlets are scheduled to open in the current quarter. The state has entered into an agreement with the National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India (NCCF) to supply a wide range of goods.
More than 90 quality products will be made available through the existing network of ration shops, with prices kept below prevailing market rates.Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar has been closely associated with the launch. The first outlets have already begun operations, and several hundred more are reported to be ready.
The government intends to use the public distribution system infrastructure to expand access to affordable essentials for ordinary households.The move reflects an effort to modernise the ration shop network while providing competition in the organised retail space.
By combining the reach of fair-price shops with a broader product range, Mee Mart aims to serve both ration card holders and the general public. Its success will depend on consistent supply, quality control, and the ability to maintain lower prices over time.
