Ruling parties in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana had pinned high hopes on the delimitation of Assembly constituencies of both the states to accomodate the incoming leaders in to those parties. According to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, the number of constituencies should increased but the process did not begin yet as it requires amendments to Articles 82 & 170 of the Constitution.
According to the current laws, the delimitation can be taken only after a period of 25 years (till first census after 2026), which means such an exercise can be taken up only after 2031 if fresh amendments are not made. However NDA government is relying on Congress and opposition parties in Rajya Sabha to pass the amendments as it does not have enough majority there. So the center is hesitant to take up the process now.
As of now Telangana has 119 and AP 175 seats. As per sections 26 & 15 of AP Reorganization Act, 2014, the number of assembly seats shall be increased from 119 to 175 in Telangana and from 153 to 225 in AP.
