Chandrababu Naidu on Direct Mayor Elections
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has defended the direct election of mayors and municipal chairpersons, stating that the system can improve political stability and help reduce corruption in urban local bodies.
Responding to a journalist’s question about the decision-making powers of directly elected mayors, Chandrababu explained that administrative authority and institutional stability are two different aspects of municipal governance.
He said municipal priorities would be decided collectively by the elected body, while the responsibility for implementing those decisions would rest with the designated administrative officer. The mayor or chairperson would supervise the implementation of these priorities.
Chandrababu stressed the importance of maintaining coordination between elected representatives and administrative officials. He said both sides must work together to ensure that municipal decisions are implemented effectively.
Comparing direct and indirect elections, the Chief Minister said his experience had convinced him that direct elections provide greater stability. He also expressed confidence that the system could reduce opportunities for corruption.
According to Chandrababu, indirect elections can create recurring political difficulties, while direct elections offer a more stable arrangement for local administration.
The Andhra Pradesh government has introduced direct elections for municipal mayors and chairpersons under the revised municipal election rules notified in September 2026. Voters will directly elect these representatives for five-year terms.
The Chief Minister expressed complete confidence in the direct election system, maintaining that it would offer several advantages for urban local governance.
His remarks come amid preparations for the Andhra Pradesh municipal elections, with political parties finalising candidates and seat-sharing arrangements across the state.
