Chennai has emerged as the safest city in India according to the global rankings for 2025. Interestingly, none of the major metros such as Delhi, Kolkata, and Bengaluru made it to the list. Even Hyderabad was absent from the rankings. Surprisingly, Mumbai did not feature either, though its satellite city Navi Mumbai secured a spot.
Navi Mumbai ranked sixth among Indian cities, with a global position of 128. Meanwhile, Chennai secured the eighth spot in the national rankings, holding the 158th position globally. This puts Chennai ahead of many other well-known cities when it comes to safety.
The other cities considered safest in India are Mangalore, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur, Thiruvananthapuram, Pune, and Chandigarh. Notably, Mangalore in coastal Karnataka topped the Indian list, while Chandigarh came in at the tenth position.
The rankings show that Tier II cities dominate the safety index. There was a time when Mumbai was seen as the safest metro, but it has now slipped off the list entirely. These findings were released by the Nambeo Safety Index by City for the year 2025.
