Hyderabad performs better in air quality when compared to Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. However, among South Indian cities, Hyderabad has higher pollution levels than Bengaluru and Chennai.
The data was shared at a conference held in Hyderabad titled Air Pollution Index and Air Quality Management. Officials from the Pollution Control Board presented figures showing a reduction in pollution compared to previous years.
Despite the improvement, concerns remain. According to statistics from the WHO and the CPCB, pollution levels in Hyderabad are still high.
As per accepted norms, 40 milligrams of pollutants per cubic meter of air are considered safe. In Hyderabad, the levels range between 82 and 88, which is nearly double the norm.
Even when measured against the CPCB limit of 60 mg of dust particles, Hyderabad exceeds the limit by around 35 percent. In January this year, PM 10 levels ranged from a minimum of 80 mg to a maximum of 105 mg.
A survey conducted by IIT Kanpur identified seven major pollution hotspots in Hyderabad. The Pollution Control Board suggested measures to control pollution in these areas.
The identified hotspots include Khairatabad-Koti, Jeedimetla, BHEL-Ameerpet, Nampally-Charminar, Mehdipatnam-Hi-Tec City-Kukatpally, Secunderabad-Sainikpuri, and LB Nagar-Koti.
In 2025, air pollution levels in Hyderabad were described as okay to satisfying. However, there were no days recorded as pollution-free.
