According to an annual survey conducted by McAfee, Tweens, Teens and Technology 2014, Hyderabad recently overtook Chennai when it comes to pre-teens using social media during school hours. The study was conducted on the online behaviour and social networking habits of Indian tweens (eight to 12 years) and teens and it is found that 55 per cent of Hyderabad’s tweens access social media during school hours.
According to the study, Facebook is the most popular site visited among them and is visited by more than 93 per cent of that age group. YouTube (87 per cent) and Whatsapp (79 per cent) comes next in terms of popularity.
What is more alarming is that 10-12- year-old access several social media sites like Snapchat, Pinterest, Tinder, Tumblr and Vine more than teenagers though the minimum age to register to these social networking sites is 13 years.
