An Indian American identified as Nabaruna Karmakar, 33, was found dead with two gunshot wounds on April 14. She was found dead at their home in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her husband, Michael Matthews, 40, has been charged with her murder.
Karmakar is remembered by her friends and family as an accomplished engineer, researcher, and data scientist. She worked in research at SAS Institute and earned master’s and doctorate degrees in industrial engineering from North Carolina Uni.
According to local media, Michael had called 911 to report a double suicide after allegedly shooting his wife dead. When they found Karmarkar, she was incidentally the only person struck by gunfire at the scene, and the police now believe she was murdered.
However, they haven’t been able to establish the motive of the murder. Mathew appeared in jail on April 17 and is being held in jail on bond. Meanwhile, their neighbors say they could not believe the incident as the couple was friendly and loved traveling.
A Gofundme.com page has been created for her, and the fundraiser says, “We are all deeply saddened by the death of Nabaruna Karmakar, a beautiful girl with a smart mind whose life was claimed by gun violence.
