After maintaining silence on the capital issue following the 2024 defeat, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy spoke to national media and made sharp remarks against Amaravati. He alleged that construction in a river basin was illegal and questioned the plan to build a city there.
Jagan Mohan Reddy said Amaravati is located 40 kilometres from Vijayawada and 40 kilometres from Guntur. He claimed the region lacks basic infrastructure such as power, water, and electricity, and urged the Supreme Court to intervene in the matter.
He also criticised the second phase of land pooling. He said 50,000 acres were taken in the first phase with plans to develop each acre at two crore rupees, amounting to one lakh crore rupees, and another 50,000 acres would double the cost, worrying farmers.
His comments reflect continued opposition to the capital city concept. There is a view that such statements revive fears of the earlier three capitals experiment and reinforce resistance towards Amaravati’s development.
Jagan Mohan Reddy’s criticism is often directed at Chandrababu Naidu and the Kamma community, with Amaravati becoming the focal point of this hostility. This pattern has been evident whenever the capital issue is discussed.
Two TDP MLAs are likely pleased with these remarks. Tadikonda MLA Sravan Kumar and Mangalagiri MLA Nara Lokesh represent constituencies that fall directly within the Amaravati capital region.
The Amaravati capital area originally included 29 villages across Thullur, Tadepalli, and Mangalagiri mandals in the erstwhile Guntur district. These villages are spread across the Mangalagiri and Tadikonda SC assembly constituencies.
Most of the villages, mainly in Thullur mandal, fall under the Tadikonda constituency. Krishnayapalem, Kuragallu including Neerukonda hamlet, Nidamarru, and Nowluru including Yerrabalem and Bethapudi hamlets come under Mangalagiri constituency.
The capital issue has a strong influence on voting patterns in both constituencies and nearby areas. Political statements on Amaravati continue to shape public opinion beyond the immediate capital villages.
In the 2024 elections, TDP won both Tadikonda and Mangalagiri with record majorities. Tadikonda saw a majority of 39,606 votes, while Mangalagiri recorded a margin of 91,413 votes.
In 2019, YSR Congress won both seats despite the capital factor. Voters later became more alert, and the 2024 results reflected a clear shift, making continued caution likely in future elections.
