Is Jana Sena’s Membership Drive Well Timed?

Right now, in Andhra Pradesh, there is a new debate regarding Kapu identity and Kapus role in governance in the state. Thanks to the Ambati Rambabu issue, the Kapu political identity crisis has come forth. Many questioned Pawan Kalyan for keeping silent when the Kapu issue was raised in the matter.

Now, Jana Sena has announced its active membership drive. However, political analysts feel the timing is just right and they say it shows that Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM is a master strategist.

With Kapus hoping to see a CM from their community, Pawan Kalyan stands as a poster boy for their dreams. And the membership drive’s timing is ideal, say political analysts.

Pawan Kalyan started the active membership drive programme at the party office in Mangalagiri on Sunday. Party head Pawan Kalyan enrolled as the first member and donated Rs 2 crore for the party.

This sets a precedent for cash-rich Kapus to contribute to strengthen the party that is not particularly caste-based, but is led by a Kapu leader, say political analysts.

Under the active membership, three categories of people will be enrolled. Those working for party ideology and principles will be called the udyami. Those who support party struggles, inspire younger generation and promote its ideals will be called sadhaks. Individuals who provide indirect support through financial donations, technical expertise, service or intellectual contribution to the party’s public and political activities will be called pradatas.

Pawan Kalyan founded Jana Sena with 150 members. It’s first membership drive was in 2021 when 90,000 members enrolled and after the 2024 elections, the numbers swelled to 12.98 lakh. Every one from daily wage owners to so-called intellectual contributors joined the party.

It remains to be seen which demographics will join Jana Sena in this latest drive and how the party will leverage the latest Kapu identity crisis, say political analysts.
