L&T Agrees To Repair Medigadda Barrage

Medigadda barrage repair works underway

Infrastructure firm L&T has agreed to take up repair works at the Medigadda barrage after responding to notices issued by the Telangana government. The development comes amid an ongoing dispute over responsibility and pending payments.

The Telangana government informed L&T that the Medigadda pier had sunk within the Defect Liability period. It warned the firm to begin repairs without insisting on the clearance of pending dues linked to the project.

While L&T has expressed willingness to repair the barrage, it has also reiterated concerns over unpaid amounts. The company stated that significant payments are still pending for works executed under the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project.

The Kaleshwaram project was a flagship initiative of the BRS government and was completed in 2019. However, the Medigadda barrage suffered damage and subsidence during floods in 2023, raising serious concerns.

After coming to power in 2023, the Congress government ordered a detailed review of the project. Central agencies, including the National Dam Safety Authority, pointed to construction faults as a key reason for the damage.

Based on these findings, the Telangana government has maintained that the cost of repairs must be borne by the construction firm. It has clearly stated that the responsibility for the damage lies with the builder.
