A shocking incident struck the Supreme Court on Monday. You would not expect a lawyer to approach the Chief Justice’s bench and throw a shoe at CJI BR Gavai. The court proceedings froze in disbelief.
Security quickly restrained the lawyer and took him away. As they dragged him out, he shouted, “sanatan ka apmaan nahin sahega Hindustan” (India will not tolerate insult of sanatan). The court hall echoed at his words.
Justice Gavai regained control and kept calm. He did not let this assault shake him. He said such acts will not scare him or halt justice.
On 16 September, Justice Gavai referred to an idol of Lord Vishnu in Khajuraho. He argued that the matter fell under the Archaeological Survey of India’s domain, not the Supreme Court’s. His comment triggered heavy criticism online from many Indians.
Facing backlash, Justice Gavai issued a clarification later. He stressed he meant no disrespect to faith. The episode shows how charged discourse can turn dangerous in court.
