An important development has taken place in the Obulapuram Mining case. The Supreme Court has appointed a committee to examine the lease boundaries and the extent of illegal mining. The committee will be led by retired judge Sudhanshu Dhulia and will have seven other members.

The CJI jury, which heard the petition filed by the AP government, took this decision. The committee will include one member from the environment authority committee, two members from the union forest and environment ministry, and three members from the state forest and environment ministry. The report has to be submitted within three months.

The Obulapuram Mining case remains high profile because of the large-scale illegal iron ore mining linked to ex Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy. The case began in 2009 and has stayed in the news for over a decade.

Although the accused have been sentenced earlier as well as recently, Gali Janardhan Reddy and his associates are currently out on bail.

All eyes are now on the committee report, as the future of Gali Janardhan Reddy and his associates depends heavily on its findings.
