HC Key Remarks Over BC Reservations in Local Polls

Telangana HC BC reservations ruling

The Telangana High Court made key remarks on the BC reservations government order issued by Revanth Reddy’s administration. The court questioned how the state could proceed with the GO while the matter was still pending with the Governor.

The court noted that issuing the GO was inappropriate while awaiting the Governor’s decision. It also highlighted that reservations are capped at 50%, raising concerns about the legality of extending BC quotas beyond this limit.

During the hearing, the High Court asked the Advocate General several questions about reservations. The Advocate General requested the court to hear the matter after the Dassera holidays, citing time needed to consult the government.

The judge responded by considering whether to postpone local body elections until after the holidays. The Advocate General said he would seek instructions from the government and provide a response at the next hearing.

The court set the next hearing for October 8. With the State Election Commission planning to announce local poll dates before September 30, the High Court’s observations create a significant challenge for the Telangana government.
