In a move which can unsettle even the hardcore supporters of TRS, the ruling government has decided to triple the existing number of toddy shops in GHMC area. It is known that the government has opened 35 Toddy shops once it is elevated to power after Toddy shops were banned in 2005.Now the government has decided to increase the 35 shops to 103.
However there are fears that such move will increase the risk of sale of spurious liquor as there are no toddy trees in the greater Hyderabad limits. Government says it will appoint field officers with kits for detecting chloral hydroxide, diazepam and other additives. They say inspections at regular intervals will decrease the adulteration. Government also promises to have their licenses suspended or cancelled
Toddy Shops (Kallu Compounds) were banned in 2005 by the then Congress government following complaints against the location of toddy shops in residential areas and the nuisance created by drunken men.
