Garividi Laksmi is a biopic about a folk singer who goes by the same stage name. The movie follows her journey from childhood, tracking her personal and professional life, her rise and fall.
Performances
Anandhi is a good choice for the title role of Garividi Lakshmi. She has a livewire presence that elevates the Burrakatha sequences, and she also nails the relationship and drama.
The last half hour helps Aanadhi a lot as the character goes through the low, with plenty of scope for dramatic moments. She delivers what’s required subtly without going overboard. It’s a memorable role for her.
Rag Mayur gets a good role and delivers the right emotion adequately. The character arc is neat, and the journey makes the role stand out among the movie’s many roles.
Gowri Naidu Jammu writes and directs Garividi Lakshmi. It’s a biopic, and credit goes to him first for bringing out her story to the world.
The movie uses a back-and-forth narrative choice to tell the tale. This choice makes one instantly think of another popular biopic, Mahanati, and it stays in our minds because of a few other presentation choices.
The actual content of the movie can be divided into two broad segments. The first one involves drama related to the personal life, and the second is the journey of Lakshmi as a singer who popularises Burrakatha.
The singing segments and Lakshmi’s rise to prominence as a folk singer who brings the rooted essence of the local to a wider audience are handled decently.
Unfortunately, the drama, especially in the first half, feels like a side note to Garividi Lakshmi‘s main musical quest. While they don’t appear randomly, their placement between songs makes them feel episodic rather than organically part of the proceedings. This is where the movie falters and makes the first half feel okayish.
The same doesn’t happen in the second half, though, and you can see it visually. The presence and track with Sattibabu (Rag Mayur) give the narrative a focal point and coherence as things proceed. His presence on both the personal and professional sides makes it possible.
Finally, in the last half hour or so, these different dramatic moments and the fall of Garividi Lakshmi happen as the folk singer, where things work out best.
The interval where Lakshmi replaces a senior folk singer and brings a new life to Burrakatha is neatly tied to the fall of Burrakatha, the influence of cinema, imposters taking over and the advent of recording dance culture.
There is a lot of stuff, but most of it stays at a surface level. We don’t fully see the real impact; it’s conveyed through words. This keeps the movie, and its content, from reaching its real potential.
Garividi Lakshmi is still an appreciative attempt at its subject and what it wants to convey. The ending, especially with real people, is a nice touch.
Overall, Garividi Lakshmi picks up potent content by choosing the story of a forgotten folk singer. However, it’s uneven and unexciting in the first hour, only picking up in the final half hour. Even then, it fails to give a knockout punch and settles for an appreciable but okay watch category.
Performances by Other Actors
Naresh, who is on a roll, gets another impactful role. He adds to the much-needed emotional punch towards the end. Raashi gets a good part while it lasts. Sharanya Pradeep is reliable as usual. Ankith Koyya is fine and does well in the final scene. Shakalaka Shankar and others are okay.
Charan Arjun’s music is good as it reuses the folk songs well. The background score is also alright. The cinematography could have been better. The proceedings have a low-budget feel.
The editing gives the movie an uneven tone. It’s a difficult job, though, balancing emotion and songs. Still, the last half an hour shows things could be done better. The writing, sticking to authentic Uttar Andhra slang, is fine.
