In recent years, stand-up comedy in India has become really popular, attracting a wide range of people. But sometimes, stand-up comedians can say things that upset some folks.
This happened when Vidushi Swaroop, a stand-up comedian, made a joke about prostitution that has got extreme reactions on social media.
In her act, she said that prostitution is one of the coolest professions. This is the only profession where freshers have more demand than experienced ones. She said that in this profession, an intern earns more money than the company’s CEO. Her comments upset many people online, who thought it was disrespectful.
A famous poet cum politician, Kumar Vishwas also criticized her. He said the joke was not just a joke; it was cruel and made fun of important values. Some commented that wokeism is destroying the culture of India.
But not everyone was upset. Some people defended Swaroop, saying that comedy is a way to make us think about society’s problems.
Swaroop later explained on Instagram that the video didn’t show the whole story and asked people to watch the entire performance before judging.
