Privacy Dead? Google Now Lets Boss Read Your Chats?

Google’s new move around Android RCS Archival deserves attention beyond company statements. The change reshapes how messages work on work phones. What looks like a feature upgrade actually redraws the line between private and monitored communication.

This does not mean every Android phone now sends messages to employers. It targets corporate-owned devices only. Still, if a work phone feels personal, that is a mistake. On such devices, every message turns into company data.

On fully managed Android phones, IT teams can now archive all SMS, MMS, and RCS chats through Google Messages. This includes edits, deleted texts, and full threads. If privacy felt safe earlier, that assumption has now ended.

End-to-end encryption does not save your messages here. Archiving happens at the device level after messages decrypt. Your chats join the same category as office email. They stay stored, searchable, and reviewable when needed.

Google says a banner will alert you when archiving is active. But a tiny notice does not protect you. Employers across sectors can use this tool. Even personal texts can land inside corporate systems without your consent.

The takeaway stays simple. Never use a company-owned phone for private chats. Keep a separate device for personal use. Treat your work phone as fully visible because that is exactly how this system works.
