If things move as planned, Hyderabad may soon follow Bengaluru’s traffic police and introduce a ‘pay and park’ model in the city’s IT corridors. Bengaluru, known as the most congested city in South India, is already testing this system on a trial basis. Hyderabad is now considering the same approach as congestion continues to rise.
During peak hours, several signals across the city experience long jams, and the situation becomes worse in the monsoon season. The Hyderabad traffic police have already suggested running buses inside IT parks to reduce pressure on main roads. IT companies are encouraging car pooling and shared transport to ease the load further.
Hyderabad now has the highest vehicle density in the region, touching 9000 vehicles per kilometre in Hi-Tech City, Gachibowli and the Financial District. The IT/ITES sector alone has 9,46,000 employees as of 2024, and most commute in personal vehicles, adding to congestion and pollution every day.
On top of that, 3000 new vehicles are hitting the roads daily in Telangana, pushing the system to its limits. City experts say that creating bus stops along regular employee routes and introducing a 10% parking fee in IT corridors can help reduce the growing traffic burden.
