Traffic Horror: Hyderabad Becoming Bengaluru 2.0?

Hyderabad traffic jam on IT stretch

Traffic has become one of the biggest flaws of India’s rapidly growing cities. From well-known tech hubs to new IT corridors, the story is the same. Growth outpaces planning, and the result is endless jams that make daily life difficult for commuters.

Bengaluru has long been the most famous example, becoming almost a shorthand for traffic chaos in everyday conversations. But now, a closer look at Hyderabad shows that the same issues are slowly beginning to appear there as well.

In recent weeks, pictures of cars stuck for hours in Hyderabad’s IT stretch have gone viral online. The city, once promoted as India’s “new Silicon Valley,” is facing serious gridlocks near its tech parks. Shiny office towers arrived quickly to attract global firms, but the supporting roads, parking, public transport, and traffic control did not keep pace.

This is strikingly similar to how Bengaluru’s situation worsened over decades of unchecked growth. On social media, Bengaluru and Hyderabad comparisons often spark heated debates. Some highlight Bengaluru’s notorious 90-minute crawl on the Outer Ring Road, while others recall flooded flyovers and civic mess in Hyderabad.

Supporters of Hyderabad argue that the city is still better placed, with a faster Outer Ring Road and ongoing infrastructure projects. Unlike Bengaluru, which often relies on quick fixes, Hyderabad is at least trying to plan big upgrades while continuing to grow.

Pointing fingers at each other’s problems may be easy, but the real challenge lies in how cities learn and adapt. Hyderabad still has a chance, and perhaps even an advantage, if it pushes infrastructure strongly before the traffic burden becomes too heavy to reverse.
