Teenager’s Tragic Death: Language Discrimination?

A tragic incident from Mumbai has raised serious concerns about language discrimination in a diverse country like India. Nineteen-year-old Arnav Khaire left home for college and never returned. The events during his train journey changed everything for his family.

While travelling, Arnav spoke to a man in Hindi after some pushing and shoving. A few passengers grew angry because he did not speak Marathi. They argued with him and then assaulted him inside the train.

The attack left Arnav deeply disturbed, and he later took his own life. The loss shocked many people who felt that no disagreement about language should ever lead to violence. You can see how such behaviour destroys lives and families.

India has many languages, cultures and communities, and you often hear people speak about unity. But incidents like this show how discrimination based on language, caste or community still harms individuals. It reminds you that respect must guide every interaction.

A language is only a tool for communication. It cannot measure a person’s value. No one deserves punishment for speaking the language they feel comfortable with, and no language should be treated as more important than someone’s life.

This incident shows why society must reject such behaviour. You need strong awareness and firm action to prevent similar tragedies. India’s strength lies in its diversity, and every person has the right to speak any language without fear.
