Netizens were taken by surprise when OpenAI, an artificial intelligence company behind the widely-used GPT-3 language model, announced a leadership shakeup. The OpenAI board of directors made a decision to fire Sam Altman, their former CEO, due to diminishing trust in him as a leader. Mira Murati, OpenAI’s former CTO took over from him.
Nonetheless, a few netizens considered Murati to be Indian because of her name and looks. Vibin Baburajan tweeted that Murati is the newest Indian-origin CEO of a major international technology company like Pichai, Nadella and IBM respectively have.
Nevertheless, these other users refuted this claim and stated that Murati was in actual fact an Albanian. She is of Albanian birth but migrated to USA when she was twelve. She attended MIT where she studied electrical engineering and computer science and later worked on the Tesla Model X before moving to OpenAI in 2018.
Murati becomes the first female, and first Albanian, to head OpenAI – an organisation set up with the objective of creating AI that benefits every human on earth but never harms any, nor is it controlled by just a few. As head of research at OpenAI, she’s in charge of R&D and partnership activities, including their main, GPT-3 system.
