What Is the Film About?

Hi moive follows Mayil Swamy (Kavin), who initially fails in love and later finds his true love in Devayani (Nayanthara). This forms the film’s basic storyline.

Performances

Nayanthara looks good on screen as usual, and her screen presence is one of the film’s few strenghts. Performance-wise, however, there is little to mention, as it is a simple role she has played several times before. Kavin also looks good and delivers a neat performance within the limited scope of his role.

Analysis

Hi Movie opens with a highly familiar template. Mayil Samy (Kavin) faces rejection in love, followed by the usual disappointment and suicide drama. From there until the interval, director Vishnu Edavan follows a beaten-to-death formula.

The only freshness comes from the cast, with Kavin as Mayil Swamy and Nayanthara as Devayani. Their struggles and almost every situation give a constant “been there, seen that” feeling.

A few references to Kamal Haasan bring some fun, but apart from that, even the interval block feels just okay. The first half is crisp and barely passable, but its biggest drawback is the lack of even a single genuinely fresh scene.

The second half spends some time on the pregnancy angle to generate humor, but it adds neither freshness nor engagement. The entire narrative is predictable, revolving around Devayani realizing Mayil Swamy’s genuine love for him before leading to an overly melodramatic climax.

Prabhu and Suhasini’s track is a fine example of how basic and beaten-to-death the writing is. Hardly any scene offers the freshness or charm that today’s audiences would enjoy. Everything feels like a rehash, with a fresh cast being the only difference.

Even the crucial climax, where Devayani finally accepts Mayil Swamy’s love, follows a template we have seen for years.

Overall, Hi is a formulaic love story filled with familiar scenes. A few humorous moments work here and there, but the film is mostly an unexciting rehash of proven formulas with a new cast. By the end, it becomes a thoroughly unengaging watch.

Performances by Other Actors

Among the supporting cast, Radhika Sarathkumar is grossly wasted, getting only a handful of moments to make her presence felt. The same goes for seasoned actors like Prabhu and K. Bhagyaraj. Despite their talent, the limited scope of the script leaves none of them with any real impact.

VTV Ganesh appears in just one scene, while the other comedians merely fill their parts. Ultimately, not a single supporting character stays with you after you leave the theatre.

Music and Other Departments?

Jen Martin’s music is functional for a simple film like this, but neither the songs nor the background score offer anything particularly noteworthy. Rayees Shukla’s cinematography is decent, and the film looks visually pleasing. Philomin Raj’s editing keeps the narrative mostly crisp, though it begins to drag toward the end, primarily due to screenplay issues. The production values from Seven Screen Studio and Rowdy Pictures are adequate for a simple romantic drama like Hi.

Highlights?

– Barely any, other than lead cast

Drawbacks?

– A beaten-to-death template from start to finish

– Zero freshness in the scenes or humor

– An overly melodramatic and formulaic climax

Did I Enjoy It?

No. Despite the fresh and impressive cast, the writing is too formulaic, making the entire film feel like a rehash from start to finish.

Will You Recommend It?

No, not for a theatrical watch. Despite its casting advantage, the film is barely passable even on OTT.
