Whatsapp: Usernames To Replace Phone Numbers Soon

WhatsApp username feature preview

Meta is testing a new WhatsApp feature that replaces phone numbers with usernames. In its beta stage, the update lets you create a handle like Instagram, making it easier to connect without revealing your number.

The goal is to give you a unique, personalised handle for chatting and joining groups. This change aims to improve privacy and protect users from spam, scams, and unwanted contact on the platform.

With this update, others can reach you using your username even if they don’t have your phone number. In group chats, members can identify you by your handle instead of your number, keeping your personal details private.

Currently, not everyone can use this feature. Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, is also exploring a PIN-based connection option. This means users can connect securely using a PIN, adding another safety layer to your communication experience.
