What exactly is Team India’s plan for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli? If the selectors have already decided that the two senior stars are not part of the 2027 ODI World Cup plans, then why has there been no clear communication?
These are the questions Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has now raised.
Speaking on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin said that no player likes hearing that the team wants to move on, but keeping things uncertain for over a year only makes the situation worse.
Ashwin admitted that every player would naturally feel disappointed after such a conversation.
Despite, he believes clear communication is far better than leaving experienced players guessing about their future.
He also questioned why the uncertainty has been allowed to continue for so long when the 2027 ODI World Cup is getting closer, saying the decision should have been communicated much earlier if the roadmap was already clear.
The former off spinner also warned that uncertainty can affect a player’s mindset. If a cricketer feels he is no longer wanted in the dressing room, it becomes difficult to perform with complete freedom.
Ashwin compared it to living in a house where people do not want you to stay. While he accepted that the final call belongs to the selectors and team management, Ashwin made his own view clear.
If the decision is based only on cricket, he would still want the experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in South Africa for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
