Gautam Gambhir has been criticised a lot since taking charge as India’s head coach. But former India spinner Harbhajan Singh believes there is more to Gambhir than what people see from the outside.
Harbhajan called Gautam Gambhir a “badhiya banda” and said his former teammate has always been very direct.
According to him, Gambhir does not always say things people want to hear, and his way of speaking can sometimes create problems.
Harbhajan believes Gambhir’s intention has always been to put the team first. He also said Gambhir wants India to play with one clear mindset to win.
Gambhir’s time as coach has had both highs and lows. India have won the T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy and Asia Cup under him. despite, the test team has suffered big defeats against Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
That has led to questions over his coaching and team management. Harbhajan feels Gambhir should not be judged only by his public image.
He also backed Shubman Gill as India’s captain. Gill has faced criticism after India’s recent ODI results, but Harbhajan believes he has the cricketing ability and mindset to succeed.
According to Harbhajan, both Gambhir and Gill need time. The question now is whether Gambhir’s direct approach will eventually become India’s strength or continue to remain a problem.
