Former England spinner Monty Panesar believes Ravi Shastri could be a strong alternative if the England and Wales Cricket Board considers a change. He shared his view after seeing England lose direction in major Test series.

McCullum’s Mixed Tenure Since 2022

McCullum took charge in 2022 after a heavy Ashes loss. Along with Ben Stokes, he revived the team at first. England won several early matches and adopted an aggressive approach that made headlines worldwide.

Recent Results Create Pressure

England’s performance has declined in long Test series, especially against Australia and India. In the current Ashes, they are down 0-3 with two matches left. The situation has increased debate about coaching and strategy.

Panesar’s Argument for Ravi Shastri

Speaking on journalist Ravi Bisht’s YouTube channel, Panesar said England need a coach who knows how to win in Australia. He believes Shastri is the right choice due to his past success against Australian teams.

Panesar added that beating Australia requires awareness of their mindset and game plan. He said Shastri proved this by handling high-pressure conditions earlier in his coaching career.

Shastri’s Record Against Australia

During his time with India, Shastri guided the team to Test series wins in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21. The second win came despite injuries in the squad and a heavy loss in Adelaide.

McCullum’s Response to Criticism

McCullum has stated that he wishes to continue. He accepts that the final call is with the board. His contract runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup, which also includes the next home Ashes.

After the Ashes loss, he said his focus is on learning from the tour and improving the team. He added that he still enjoys coaching England and aims to give his best.
