Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has advised Jasprit Bumrah against playing all three formats until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
With India facing a busy schedule, Ravi Shastri believes the team must manage its premier fast bowler carefully to keep him fit for the biggest assignments ahead.
Bumrah’s availability will be particularly important in Test cricket, with India scheduled to play two Tests in New Zealand before hosting Australia for a five match series.
Ravi Shastri wants India to prioritise Bumrah in the longest format while using him selectively in white ball cricket.
The selectors appear to be following a similar approach, with Bumrah rested for the white ball matches on India’s New Zealand tour and selected for the two Test series.
I would rather preserve him for the Test matches. That’s very important. He becomes a key member of that Indian side. Then he should be used sparingly in the other formats, Shastri said.
Ravi Shastri also spoke about the challenge facing Shubman Gill on the upcoming tour.
Gill impressed during India’s 2-2 Test series draw in England in 2025, scoring 754 runs at an average of 75.40. He also led India to a 1-0 Test series win in Sri Lanka.
Despite, Ravi Shastri believes winning in New Zealand will be a different challenge for the captain. He acknowledged Gill’s familiarity with New Zealand conditions but stressed that leading India overseas would test his captaincy.
Ravi Shastri also backed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s selection, pointing to the fast bowler’s recent form and experience. He believes Bhuvneshwar could be particularly effective in New Zealand conditions.
India’s New Zealand tour begins with five T20Is on October 22, followed by five ODIs and two Test matches. With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, Bumrah’s workload, Gill’s leadership will remain important talking points.
