India‘s reported plan to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the ODI series against New Zealand has raised a bigger question about the team’s priorities.
With the next ODI World Cup approaching, should India focus more on preparing their best fast bowler for the tournament rather than managing him around the Test schedule?
The team management reportedly wants Bumrah to focus fully on red ball cricket ahead of the New Zealand Test series.
There is also a possibility of him playing the third India A match before the Tests, while he has been advised to keep reporting to the Centre of Excellence (COE) for regular fitness checks.
Managing Bumrah‘s workload is understandable, given his importance to the team and his injury history. Despite, the bigger concern is whether India are making the right decision by keeping him away from ODI cricket when the next World Cup is approaching.
India’s chances of reaching the World Test Championship final also need to be considered before making such decisions.
If qualifying for the final becomes increasingly difficult, should the management still prioritise that target over preparing for a major white ball tournament?
Bumrah is not just another fast bowler. His ability to take wickets with the new ball and control the scoring in the death overs makes him one of India’s biggest assets in limited overs cricket.
Keeping him fit for the World Cup should be a major priority, especially when injuries can change a team’s tournament plans overnight.
India need to manage Bumrah carefully, but workload management should also reflect the tournaments that matter most.
There is little benefit in risking their best fast bowler for a difficult to reach WTC final if that decision leaves India less prepared for the World Cup.
The management must decide where Bumrah can make the biggest difference and plan accordingly.
