Rohit Sharma has opened up about his relationship with Virat Kohli, saying that although the two have different ways of approaching the game, their thinking and goal for Indian cricket remain the same.
Rohit and Kohli have been teammates for nearly two decades after making their India debuts in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
Both players are currently part of India’s ODI setup under captain Shubman Gill and are preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Speaking to JioHotstar, Rohit said his relationship with Kohli started during their early years in international cricket and has developed into a strong camaraderie over the years.
There’s a strong camaraderie between the two of us, and we understand what it requires to be at a certain level when you’re playing at this level. Methods are different, obviously, but that’s how it should be, every individual is different, Rohit said.
Rohit also praised Kohli for his contribution to Indian cricket and said the former captain has not changed his approach despite the leadership changes around him.
When he was captain, pretty much the same. When I was captain, pretty much the same. And I don’t see any reason why anything needs to change, he said.
The two have also continued to discuss cricket and help each other improve.
Rohit revealed that Kohli sometimes gives him advice about his batting, while he also speaks to Kohli when he notices something in his game.
Kohli has already confirmed that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be his final World Cup for India. Rohit, however, has not announced any retirement plans from ODI cricket.
When asked whether he had discussed the 2027 World Cup with Kohli, Rohit Sharma said there was no need for a separate conversation because Kohli already understands the importance of the tournament.
The two continue to focus on what they can do for the team when they bat together. Rohit said their discussions are mainly about which bowler to attack, when to take singles and how to build the innings.
We’re different individuals in terms of how we carry ourselves on the field, but other than that, goal, thinking for the team is pretty much the same, Rohit said.
With the 2027 World Cup approaching, Rohit and Kohli remain two of the most experienced players in India’s ODI setup.
While their methods may be different, their focus remains on helping India win matches and compete for another World Cup title.
