Shreyas Iyer doubtful for South Africa ODIs

India has suffered a major setback ahead of the three-match ODI series against South Africa as vice-captain Shreyas Iyer remains doubtful to play. The Mumbai batsman, injured during the Australia tour, is still recovering and needs over a month to regain full fitness.

Iyer sustained a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground while diving to catch Alex Carey. He suffered a lacerated spleen with internal bleeding and was rushed to a Sydney hospital. A source said his oxygen levels once dropped to 50, and he blacked out for nearly ten minutes.

BCCI has confirmed that Iyer is now stable and recovering well. Specialists in Sydney and India are monitoring his condition, and he will undergo further consultations before returning home. Iyer also thanked fans on social media, saying he is “getting better every day” and grateful for the support.

Opportunity for Tilak Varma

With Iyer sidelined, Hyderabad’s Tilak Varma is likely to get his first ODI cap. The young left-hander impressed during the Asia Cup and is viewed as an ideal No. 4 option to strengthen India’s middle order.

Upcoming series schedule

India will play three ODIs in Ranchi, Raipur, and Visakhapatnam starting November 30, following the two-Test series beginning November 14. The middle order will face a tough test without one of its most experienced batters.

New chance for the next generation

Iyer’s injury history, including previous back stiffness and fatigue, has been a concern for the selectors. However, his absence now opens the door for fresh talent. For Tilak Varma, this could be a defining moment to prove his consistency and cement his spot in the Indian ODI setup. Fans and selectors alike will be watching how the young batsman handles the pressure in South Africa.
